Career-focused LMS: Securing a 78% engagement rate with gamification and an intuitive page builder

Project overview
How do we keep learners engaged? That’s the central question career-focused educators around the world ask themselves. Argyle, an EdTech company from Nigeria, decided to provide the ultimate answer to this question: a career-focused learning management system (LMS).
Our client’s LMS was meant to do more than drive learner engagement with gamification and personalization, however. Argyle wanted the platform to become a true time saver for educators so that they could focus on learner outcomes instead of course management or page design.
To bring this vision to life, Argyle needed an expert in human-centered design to craft user flows that promote learner engagement and save educators’ time.
That’s where we came in.

Challenges
Argyle’s key challenge was ensuring the product’s interface would drive user engagement among learners and educators.
The LMS required expertly designed gamification features and personalized dashboards to address this challenge on the learners' side. To win educators’ favor, the platform would need to facilitate course content creation and management and provide intuitive reporting and analytics features.
In addition, our client needed us to design a website to promote the product while ensuring its consistency with the LMS design choices. Argyle LMS didn’t have a logo when we started the project, so we were tasked with creating one for the company.
Here are the key business needs and requirements we defined together with our client during the discovery phase:
Strategic business needs
01 Achieve a free trial conversion rate of at least 20% within the first year
02 Keep the customer churn rate under 15% within the first year
03 Reach the net promoter score (NPS) of at least 70 within the first year
04 Secure a user engagement rate of at least 60% within the first year
05 Limit the drop-off rate to 20% within the first year
Technical requirements
01 Design a logo for the product based on the client’s existing brand identity
02 Develop a cohesive brand book for the website and the LMS
03 Design a responsive, human-centered UI/UX for the product’s website and the LMS itself
04 Ensure an average task success rate of at least 80%
05 Minimize time on task for each user flow
06 Achieve a system usability scale (SUS) score of at least 70
Our gamification and human-centered design expertise can help you drive conversions and retention.

Solutions
Based on our user research, we created wireframes for the LMS user flows and refined them in iterations until every action was as straightforward and fast as possible. We ensured the interface meets the needs of educators, learners, and admins alike.
As a result, our client received the design prototype for the whole LMS, which included the following features:
- Built-in video conferencing and chat
- Calendar view
- Course management for teacher-led, blended, self-paced, and microlearning classes
- Portals for organizations with templates and customization options
- Template-based course content creator with a page builder for customization
- User profiles and management
- Gamification (games, rewards, goals)
- To-do lists for task management
- Admin panel with analytics and resource management
- Analytics and reporting
In addition to the LMS design, we also delivered a minimalist website design for Argyle with decluttered layouts and streamlined information architecture. We ensured the website’s interface was consistent in its look and feel with the LMS itself and created responsive layouts for mobile and tablet screens in addition to the desktop design.
Finally, our client received a well-balanced, modern logo design for its website and the LMS. We ensured the logo was vibrant and contrasted to fit harmoniously into any context.

Hassle-free content creation and portal builder
We designed a powerful page builder for organization portals, course pages, and course materials to save time for educators and organizations alike. It combines aesthetically pleasing design templates for a quick setup with a robust drag-and-drop builder for page customization.
As a result, educators and organizations can benefit from a stunning, intuitive design that gives off a professional look without employing advanced design skills. The ease of adding and managing course content and portals was the most frequently praised feature in the NPS feedback, helping the product secure a score of 81 among early users.

Customizable dashboards
Different types of users expect to see different information in their dashboards. So, we designed three dashboard types for each category: admin, educator, and learner. If need be, users can also easily customize their dashboards with pre-built components using an intuitive dashboard builder.
Thanks to our focus on visual communication and a streamlined information architecture, users can easily take stock of all vital information at a glance. This, together with customization features, helped secure a 78% engagement rate across all user categories.

Gamification features
We leveraged our gamification expertise and user research to help our client refine these features for maximum impact. The final LMS prototype included three main types of gamification capabilities: games, rewards, and goals. We also designed intuitive setup and management user flows to enable educators to effectively leverage and adapt gamification to their needs.
These comprehensive, flexible gamification features helped drive learner engagement, which reached 81% for this user category.

Streamlined exams and assignments
To meet a variety of educator needs, we designed screens for 10+ assignment types and exams, including surveys, essays, quizzes, and more. The LMS also comes with a built-in plagiarism checker that allows educators to easily check submitted assignments without leaving the platform.
Thanks to our iterative improvements for this module, its early user feedback resulted in a SUS score of 82, higher than the platform’s average of 76.

User profiles
To promote interaction among learners and between learners and educators, we designed an intuitive user profile page that communicates all learner details at a glance. We ensured managing and updating the information is easy with a convenient form, complete with exhaustive labels and instructions.
In our user testing, filling out and updating user profiles were the two tasks with the highest success rate (93%), all thanks to the clear layout and exhaustive instructions.

Analytics and reporting
Admins and educators can view all course and class statistics in a single customizable dashboard, all while being able to dive deeper into individual learner progress if necessary. To save them time on reporting, the platform also provides automated custom report generation capabilities.
Our focus on intuitive data visualizations in the UI/UX design helped turn analytics and reporting into an effective tool for assessing learning outcomes and tracking performance. This enabled admins and educators to make truly data-driven decisions.
